Short explanation
Keycloak's protocol mapper can bypass token sanitization when configured with JSON type, allowing forged client roles to be injected and granting unauthorized access to protected resources. Affected products are Red Hat Build of Keycloak and Red Hat Single Sign-On 7. No active exploitation reported; patch status is unknown.
Forged roles undermine authentication, creating a risk of unauthorized access to critical services.
What should be done?
- Monitor Red Hat security advisories
- Apply patches when released
- Temporarily disable the JSON‑type protocol mapper or avoid using it
- Enforce strict role‑mapping controls
- Monitor tokens for anomalous role claims
Chain of evidence and sources
Bu güvenlik açığı, protokol eşleyicisi JSON tipinde yapılandırıldığında token sanitizasyonunu atlayarak sahte istemci rolleri eklenmesine izin verir (S0, S1).
CVE‑2026‑97848 için CISA KEV listesinde aktif istismar raporlanmamıştır (S0).
Yama durumu "UNKNOWN" olarak belirtilmiştir; resmi kaynaklarda yama doğrulanamamıştır (S0).
Show the technical text from the sources
A flaw was found in the token sanitization logic of Keycloak, an open source identity and access management solution. The issue occurs when a protocol mapper is configured to emit structured claims using the JSON type. The security check designed to remove unauthorized role mappings only looks for standard Java maps and fails to recognize Jackson based JSON objects. This allows an attacker to inject forged client roles into security tokens, which could lead to unauthorized access to protected resources.
