Short explanation

The Schema App Structured Data WordPress plugin is vulnerable in all versions up to 2.3.2 when the 'Remove Microdata' option is enabled and a malicious comment is approved, allowing unauthenticated attackers to perform a stored XSS attack and inject arbitrary scripts into pages.

Why does it matter?

Stored XSS enables malicious code to run automatically in victims' browsers, increasing the risk of session hijacking, phishing, and site integrity compromise.

What should be done?

  • Disable the 'Remove Microdata' option until a fix is released
  • Monitor and moderate comments for suspicious content
  • Follow the vendor advisory and apply any future patch promptly
  • Consider using a web application firewall to block script injection
Note on uncertainty

The sources give limited detail on some technical conditions. Review the chain of evidence below before deciding how to act.

Show the technical text from the sources

The Schema App Structured Data plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to Stored Cross-Site Scripting via Comment Content via 'Remove Microdata' Output Filter in all versions up to, and including, 2.3.2 due to insufficient input sanitization and output escaping. This makes it possible for unauthenticated attackers to inject arbitrary web scripts in pages that will execute whenever a user accesses an injected page. Exploitation requires that an administrator has enabled the plugin's 'Remove Microdata' option and approves the malicious comment.
