Short explanation

An information disclosure vulnerability exists in the Discourse platform where media uploads retain their public accessibility flags when category permissions are restricted or changed during bulk import with secure uploads enabled. Anonymous users can reach these files through short upload URLs.

Why does it matter?

This vulnerability causes sensitive media files and attachments uploaded to previously public categories that later became restricted to remain accessible to anonymous users. Unauthorized parties can read sensitive content.

What should be done?

  • Follow vendor security advisories for updates
  • Review secure uploads configuration
  • Audit upload metadata following category permission modifications
Chain of evidence and sources2 verified claims

Discourse is an open-source discussion platform. Prior to 2026.9.0, 2026.8.1, 2026.7.3, and 2026.1.9, sites with secure uploads enabled did not reconcile existing upload security metadata when a previously public category became read-restricted or when category permissions changed during a bulk import. Media and attachments uploaded while the category was public retained a public accessibility flag and remained reachable by anonymous users through their short upload URLs, including uploads associated with deleted topics. This issue is fixed in versions 2026.9.0, 2026.8.1, 2026.7.3, and 2026.1.9.

Patch and Remediation Guide

Solution & Remediation Advisory

Patch status unknown

İncelenen resmî kaynaklarda yama durumu doğrulanamadı. Bu sonuç “yama yok” anlamına gelmez.

Confirm the affected product and version against the source evidence above.
Restrict access to internet-facing services and apply network segmentation.
Until a patch is confirmed, follow the vendor advisory; do not read an unknown status as “no patch”.
Monitor server logs and network endpoints for signs of anomalous execution.
