Short explanation
A heap-based buffer overflow vulnerability in parted causes memory corruption during the handling of FAT16 volumes. Resizing a specially crafted file system can lead to a denial of service [S0].
Although requiring user interaction, this vulnerability can cause application crashes and service disruptions, leading to operational downtime [S0].
What should be done?
- Follow official vendor advisories [S0].
- Review vendor updates as the patch status remains unknown [S0].
Chain of evidence and sources
Show the technical text from the sources
A flaw was found in parted. A heap-based buffer overflow exists in libparted's file system resizing logic when handling FAT16 volumes. By convincing a user or administrator to resize a specially crafted FAT16 file system image with malformed directory metadata, an attacker can trigger an oversized read into a fixed-size memory buffer. This issue causes memory corruption, resulting in an application crash and a denial of service (DoS).
