Short explanation

BusyBox mount utility contains a flaw that lets a non‑root user bypass mount security restrictions defined in /etc/fstab by using clearing‑mask options, potentially overriding nosuid, nodev, and noexec flags.

Why does it matter?

Bypassing these restrictions can allow unprivileged users to execute privileged binaries or access devices, increasing the risk of privilege escalation.

What should be done?

  • Monitor vendor advisories for a patch
  • Apply the vendor‑provided fix when released
  • Restrict mount command usage for unprivileged users
  • Consider alternative init systems or mount implementations
  • Enforce additional mandatory access controls (e.g., SELinux)
Chain of evidence and sources4 verified claims

Show the technical text from the sources

A flaw was found in BusyBox's mount utility. A non-root user can bypass mount security restrictions set in /etc/fstab by specifying clearing-mask options on the command line. These options pass the non-root flag filter and are merged with fstab options as strings; when the combined options are re-parsed, clearing options can override nosuid, nodev, and noexec protections the administrator intended to enforce.

Patch and Remediation Guide

Solution & Remediation Advisory

Patch status unknown

İncelenen resmî kaynaklarda yama durumu doğrulanamadı. Bu sonuç “yama yok” anlamına gelmez.

Confirm the affected product and version against the source evidence above.
Restrict access to internet-facing services and apply network segmentation.
Until a patch is confirmed, follow the vendor advisory; do not read an unknown status as “no patch”.
Monitor server logs and network endpoints for signs of anomalous execution.
