Short explanation
The Canopy component in Apache SkyWalking BanyanDB fails to fully enforce readonly-role restrictions over the /monitoring/* proxy. This allows a readonly Canopy user to send non-read requests (S0).
Bypassing authorization controls allows unauthorized users or attackers to exceed readonly boundaries and perform unintended operations on the target system (S0).
What should be done?
- Upgrade to version 0.11.1 as recommended by the vendor
- Follow official vendor advisories and updates
- Review non-default configurations
Chain of evidence and sources
Show the technical text from the sources
Improper Authorization vulnerability in Apache SkyWalking BanyanDB. The Canopy includes incomplete proof-of-concept role and monitoring-proxy functionality. Under a non-default configuration with a readonly Canopy user and a reachable monitoring target, that user can send non-read requests through the monitoring proxy. This issue affects Apache SkyWalking BanyanDB: from 0.11.0 before 0.11.1. Users are recommended to upgrade to version 0.11.1, which fixes the issue.
