Short explanation
Kimai before 2.65.0 has a business logic vulnerability allowing unauthorized team-lead access via team creation. Fixed in 2.65.0. No public exploit or active exploitation reported. Patch status is UNKNOWN due to lack of vendor confirmation.
This vulnerability allows privilege escalation to team-lead roles without proper authorization, potentially enabling unauthorized access to project data. No active exploitation is reported, but the risk remains in unpatched systems. Patch status is UNKNOWN, requiring vendor confirmation for remediation.
What should be done?
- Upgrade to version 2.65.0 or later as per vendor advisory.
- Do not use versions prior to 2.65.0 if team-lead privileges are critical.
- Verify patch status through official vendor channels.
The sources give limited detail on some technical conditions. Review the chain of evidence below before deciding how to act.
Chain of evidence and sources
Show the technical text from the sources
Kimai (kimai/kimai) through 2.65.0 contains a business logic / improper authorization vulnerability in the default team creation endpoints. An authenticated user with project permission-management privileges can create or use a customer, project, or activity whose name matches an existing team; because the endpoints POST /api/customers/{id}/team, POST /api/projects/{id}/team, and POST /api/activities/{id}/team reuse an existing team of the same name and add the current user as teamlead without verifying that the user is authorized to manage that team, the attacker gains unauthorized team-lead (administration) rights over the existing team. Fixed in 2.65.0.
