GraphQL-core Denial of Service Vulnerability via OverlappingFieldsCanBeMerged Validation Rule

Short explanation

The OverlappingFieldsCanBeMerged rule in GraphQL-core triggers quadratic CPU workload during validation due to nested repeated inline fragments. An unauthenticated remote attacker can exploit this issue to pin worker processes and cause a denial of service.

Why does it matter?

This vulnerability allows remote attackers to saturate multi-worker services and pin worker processes without requiring authentication. Because it triggers during the validation phase, it occurs before standard AST-based depth or complexity controls run.

What should be done?

  • Follow vendor security advisories and updates
  • Update affected versions
  • Review the provided patch commit references
Chain of evidence and sources2 verified claims

Show the technical text from the sources

GraphQL-core is a Python port of the GraphQL.js reference implementation. From 3.0.0 until 3.2.12 and 3.3.0rc1, the OverlappingFieldsCanBeMerged rule in specified_rules repeatedly compares fields that share response names and recursively re-compares flattened inline fragments during the validation phase. The prior named-fragment memoization does not cover this path, so nested repeated inline fragments can drive quadratic and worst-case O(n²·m²) CPU work before any resolver or AST-based depth or complexity control runs. An unauthenticated remote attacker can submit a shallow, highly compressible GraphQL query that pins a worker process and can saturate a multi-worker service. This issue is fixed in versions 3.2.12 and 3.3.0rc1.

Solution & Remediation Advisory

Patch status unknown

İncelenen resmî kaynaklarda yama durumu doğrulanamadı. Bu sonuç “yama yok” anlamına gelmez.

Confirm the affected product and version against the source evidence above.
Restrict access to internet-facing services and apply network segmentation.
Until a patch is confirmed, follow the vendor advisory; do not read an unknown status as “no patch”.
Monitor server logs and network endpoints for signs of anomalous execution.
