Short explanation
A medium-severity denial of service vulnerability exists in libkcapi of Red Hat Enterprise Linux 8, 9, 10, and OpenShift Container Platform 4. A local attacker can trigger an infinite loop via improper AIO handle reuse, leading to persistent application unresponsiveness. Patch status is UNKNOWN due to lack of reliable public information.
This vulnerability enables persistent denial of service in critical system components. While not leading to privilege escalation, it can disrupt service availability in enterprise environments using Red Hat Enterprise Linux or OpenShift. Patch status is UNKNOWN, requiring vendor advisory monitoring.
What should be done?
- Monitor for signs of application unresponsiveness.
- Apply vendor-recommended updates if available.
- No fixed version is publicly documented; follow vendor advisories for updates.
The sources give limited detail on some technical conditions. Review the chain of evidence below before deciding how to act.
Chain of evidence and sources
Show the technical text from the sources
A flaw was found in libkcapi. A local attacker can influence an application that uses the Asynchronous Input/Output (AIO) interface. By reusing an AIO-enabled handle after a prior completion error, the _kcapi_aio_read_all() function can enter a non-terminating wait loop. This can lead to a persistent denial of service, making the affected application or thread unresponsive.
