Apache CXF OIDC Token Validation Flaw Allows Authentication Bypass

Short explanation

Apache CXF's OIDC token validation fails to enforce claim checks for self-issued tokens, enabling authentication bypass. Vulnerable versions are below 4.2.3, 4.1.8, and 3.6.12. No CVSS score. Patch status is UNKNOWN. No active exploitation reported by CISA.

Why does it matter?

Attackers can bypass authentication using crafted tokens, leading to unauthorized access. The flaw affects widely used Apache CXF components. Patch availability is confirmed via vendor advisories. No active exploitation reported by CISA.

What should be done?

  • Upgrade to Apache CXF 4.2.3, 4.1.8, or 3.6.12
  • Verify patch status via vendor advisories
  • Do not use versions prior to 4.2.3, 4.1.8, or 3.6.12
Note on uncertainty

The sources give limited detail on some technical conditions. Review the chain of evidence below before deciding how to act.

Chain of evidence and sources3 verified claims

Show the technical text from the sources

Apache CXF’s OIDC relying-party token validation could accept self-issued ID tokens without enforcing required claim checks (issuer/subject/audience/time and sub_jwk binding), enabling authentication bypass with crafted tokens. However, note that self-issued ID tokens are not accepted by default in the validator. Users are recommended to upgrade to versions 4.2.3 or 4.1.8 or 3.6.12, which fixes this issue.

Patch and Remediation Guide

Solution & Remediation Advisory

Patch status unknown

İncelenen resmî kaynaklarda yama durumu doğrulanamadı. Bu sonuç “yama yok” anlamına gelmez.

Confirm the affected product and version against the source evidence above.
Restrict access to internet-facing services and apply network segmentation.
Until a patch is confirmed, follow the vendor advisory; do not read an unknown status as “no patch”.
Monitor server logs and network endpoints for signs of anomalous execution.
