Short explanation
Eclipse Theia versions prior to 1.74.0 suffer from a path traversal vulnerability in the @theia/filesystem module, allowing unauthenticated access to system files. The vulnerability is actively exploitable without authentication. Patch status is UNKNOWN; no official fix has been confirmed in public sources.
This vulnerability allows attackers to access sensitive system files without authentication, posing a significant risk to system integrity and confidentiality. It is particularly dangerous in environments where system credentials or configuration files are stored in accessible locations.
What should be done?
- Upgrade to Eclipse Theia 1.74.0 or later
- Ensure patch is applied as per official vendor advisories
- Do not use browser-based deployments without token enforcement
The sources give limited detail on some technical conditions. Review the chain of evidence below before deciding how to act.
Chain of evidence and sources
Show the technical text from the sources
In Eclipse Theia versions up to and including 1.73.1, the `@theia/filesystem` backend exposes HTTP file-download endpoints (`GET /file`, `GET /files/`, `PUT /files/`) that convert a client-supplied URI directly to a filesystem path and stream the file, without confining it to the workspace or any allow-listed root. In browser (non-Electron) deployments the connection token is enforced only on WebSocket upgrades; the HTTP middleware in `@theia/core` re-issues the cookie and calls `next()` without rejecting tokenless HTTP requests, so these endpoints are reachable without a valid token. As a result an unauthenticated client can read any file readable by the backend process, including files outside the opened workspace (for example `/etc/hosts`, SSH keys, or tokens). Electron mode uses a separate `ElectronSecurityToken` and is not affected via this path.
