Short explanation
Versions of TuxGuitar prior to 2.1.0 allow a malicious .tg file to set gervil.soundbank.path to an archive. The archive’s META-INF/services/javax.sound.midi.Soundbank entry names an attacker‑supplied class, which JARSoundbankReader loads without verification and instantiates, executing the constructor with TuxGuitar’s privileges. The issue is fixed in version 2.1.0. (S0,S1)
The exploit can lead to unauthorized code execution on systems where TuxGuitar runs, potentially granting root privileges.
What should be done?
- Upgrade to TuxGuitar 2.1.0 or later (S0)
- Block opening of untrusted .tg files
- Scan files with AV/EDR solutions
The sources give limited detail on some technical conditions. Review the chain of evidence below before deciding how to act.
Chain of evidence and sources
Show the technical text from the sources
TuxGuitar is an open-source guitar tablature editor. Prior to 2.1.0, an untrusted .tg file can set gervil.soundbank.path to reference an on-disk archive, including the .tg file itself, whose META-INF/services/javax.sound.midi.Soundbank entry names an attacker-supplied class stored in that archive. When a user opens the file, JARSoundbankReader uses an unverified class loader to load and instantiate that class, executing its constructor with the privileges of the TuxGuitar process. This issue is fixed in version 2.1.0.
