Short explanation
An status-line injection vulnerability in the OpenPrinting CUPS ipp backend can lead to conditional remote code execution as lp via foomatic-rip on Foomatic-backed queues. This issue is fixed in version 2.4.20.
This flaw allows attackers to persist PPD keywords via remote printer messages and execute code within the filter context. Despite a low CVSS score, it introduces code execution risks.
What should be done?
- Update software to version 2.4.20 or later
- Follow official vendor security advisories
- Audit printer queue configurations
Chain of evidence and sources
OpenPrinting CUPS sürümlerinde 2.4.20 öncesi backend/ipp.c bileşeni satır sonu karakterlerini korumaktadır.
Zamanlayıcı enjekte edilen yeni satırı PPD kontrol satırı olarak ayrıştırarak anahtar kelimeyi kalıcı hale getirebilir.
Bu açık Foomatic destekli kuyruklarda lp yetkileri ile koşullu uzaktan kod yürütmeye yol açabilir.
Show the technical text from the sources
OpenPrinting CUPS is an open source printing system for Linux and other Unix-like operating systems. Prior to 2.4.20, the backend/ipp.c quote_string() function preserves carriage-return and line-feed characters in a remote printer-controlled marker-message before report_attr() writes the value to the scheduler status stream. The scheduler can parse an injected newline as a separate PPD: control line and persist an attacker-selected PPD keyword. The reporter demonstrated that a later print job on a Foomatic-backed queue could consume an injected FoomaticRIPCommandLine value and execute in the filter context as lp. This issue is fixed in version 2.4.20.
