Short explanation

A TOCTOU condition in the util-linux SUID mount utility can allow local users to gain root privileges.

Why does it matter?

Unauthorized local users can escalate privileges on the system and gain access to sensitive files and operations.

What should be done?

  • Update to version 2.41.5 or 2.42.2
  • Follow vendor advisory guidelines
Chain of evidence and sources2 verified claims

util-linux SUID mount aracı hook_owner.c bileşeninde TOCTOU zafiyeti barındırır.

Yerel bir kullanıcı, renameat2 yarış koşulu ile ayrıcalık değişikliklerini başka bir yola yönlendirebilir.

Show the technical text from the sources

util-linux is a random collection of Linux utilities. In util-linux 2.39 through 2.41.4 and 2.42 through 2.42.1, the SUID `mount` utility's `hook_owner.c` post-mount hook performs path-based `chmod()` and `lchown()` operations on a previously validated mount target. A local low-privileged user authorized by an `/etc/fstab` entry with `user` or `users` and an `X-mount.mode`, `X-mount.owner`, or `X-mount.group` option can use `renameat2(RENAME_EXCHANGE)` to race a writable ancestor of the target and redirect the privileged ownership or mode change to a root-owned path, potentially gaining root privileges. This issue is fixed in 2.41.5 and 2.42.2.

Confirm the affected product and version against the source evidence above.
Restrict access to internet-facing services and apply network segmentation.
Until a patch is confirmed, follow the vendor advisory; do not read an unknown status as “no patch”.
Monitor server logs and network endpoints for signs of anomalous execution.
