Short explanation

A vulnerability in the liboqs library can cause an uninitialized function pointer to be dereferenced when OQS_KEM_encaps_derand is called on certain NTRU KEM schemes, leading to a denial of service.

Why does it matter?

This vulnerability matters because it can lead to application crashes and denial of service when affected schemes are invoked.

What should be done?

  • Update liboqs to version 0.16.0 or later
  • Follow vendor advisories
Chain of evidence and sources2 verified claims

liboqs kütüphanesinde 0.16.0 öncesi sürümlerde başlatılmamış fonksiyon göstergesi dereference açığı bulunmaktadır.

Güvenlik açığı çağrı sürecinin çökmesine ve hizmet kesintisine neden olabilir.

Show the technical text from the sources

liboqs is a C-language cryptographic library that provides implementations of post-quantum cryptography algorithms. Prior to 0.16.0, OQS_KEM_encaps_derand can dereference an uninitialized encaps_derand function pointer when called on NTRU-HPS-2048-509, NTRU-HPS-2048-677, NTRU-HPS-4096-821, NTRU-HPS-4096-1229, NTRU-HRSS-701, or NTRU-HRSS-1373. The affected NTRU constructors omit the OQS_KEM.encaps_derand member because those schemes do not support derandomized encapsulation, OQS_KEM objects are allocated without zero initialization, and the wrapper in src/kem/kem.c checks only that the OQS_KEM pointer is non-null before calling through the residual heap value. An application is affected only if it instantiates one of those six NTRU KEMs and invokes OQS_KEM_encaps_derand on it. The supported impact is a calling-process crash and denial of service. This issue is fixed in version 0.16.0.

Patch and Remediation Guide

Solution & Remediation Advisory

Patch status unknown

İncelenen resmî kaynaklarda yama durumu doğrulanamadı. Bu sonuç “yama yok” anlamına gelmez.

Confirm the affected product and version against the source evidence above.
Restrict access to internet-facing services and apply network segmentation.
Until a patch is confirmed, follow the vendor advisory; do not read an unknown status as “no patch”.
Monitor server logs and network endpoints for signs of anomalous execution.
