Short explanation
A critical privilege escalation vulnerability in Rancher's impersonation middleware allows default-role users to gain full administrative access to the control plane and downstream clusters. Affected versions range from 2.11.0 to 2.14.0 before respective updates. A patch is available .
This vulnerability enables full control over Rancher control plane and downstream clusters, posing a severe risk to cluster security. Immediate remediation is required for all affected versions to prevent full compromise.
What should be done?
- Upgrade Rancher to version 2.11.16 or later, 2.12.12 or later, 2.13.8 or later, or 2.14.2 or later.
- Follow the official vendor advisory for specific version updates.
- Apply the patch referenced in GitHub PR #55983 and SUSE security advisory.
The sources give limited detail on some technical conditions. Review the chain of evidence below before deciding how to act.
Chain of evidence and sources
Rancher'in impersonation ortamı (pkg/auth/requests/impersonate.go) içinde bir yetki yükseltme açıklığı mevcuttur.

A privilege escalation vulnerability exists in Rancher's impersonation middleware (pkg/auth/requests/impersonate.go). An authenticated Rancher user with the default user global role can gain full administrative access to the Rancher control plane and transitively to all downstream clusters it manages. This issue affects Rancher: from 2.11.0 before 2.11.16, from 2.12.0 before 2.12.12, from 2.13.0 before 2.13.8, and from 2.14.0 before 2.14.2.
