Stored XSS Vulnerability in openEQUELLA

Short explanation

A stored cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerability in openEQUELLA allows authenticated or privileged users to serve HTML from the application origin [S0].

Why does it matter?

This security flaw enables attackers to serve malicious HTML files from the openEQUELLA origin, resulting in client-side security risks [S0].

What should be done?

  • Follow vendor advisories [S0]
Chain of evidence and sources2 verified claims

openEQUELLA öncesi 2026.1 sürümlerinde pre-login notice image upload uç noktası dosya türlerini doğrulamamaktadır [S0].

EDIT_SYSTEM_SETTINGS iznine sahip kullanıcılar text/html olarak sunulan HTML dosyaları yükleyebilir [S0].

Show the technical text from the sources

In openEQUELLA before 2026.1, the pre-login notice image upload endpoint (PUT /api/preloginnotice/image/{name}) does not validate the type of uploaded files and serves them with a Content-Type derived from the supplied filename. A user holding the EDIT_SYSTEM_SETTINGS permission can upload an HTML file that is then served as text/html from the openEQUELLA origin, resulting in stored cross-site scripting. Unauthenticated exploitation is possible where EDIT_SYSTEM_SETTINGS has been granted to the guest user or everyone.

Patch and Remediation Guide

Solution & Remediation Advisory

Patch status unknown

İncelenen resmî kaynaklarda yama durumu doğrulanamadı. Bu sonuç “yama yok” anlamına gelmez.

Confirm the affected product and version against the source evidence above.
Restrict access to internet-facing services and apply network segmentation.
Until a patch is confirmed, follow the vendor advisory; do not read an unknown status as “no patch”.
Monitor server logs and network endpoints for signs of anomalous execution.
