Short explanation
Parse Server is vulnerable to a denial of service (DoS) exploit due to a flaw in its email validation regular expression [S0]. An unauthenticated attacker knowing the application ID can send a crafted long email address [S0]. This can block the Node.js event loop [S0].
Blocking the Node.js event loop without requiring authentication can disrupt service for all clients [S0]. The vulnerability can be exploited directly over the network [S0].
What should be done?
- Follow vendor advisories [S0]
- Keep Parse Server versions updated [S0]
Chain of evidence and sources
Show the technical text from the sources
Parse Server before 8.6.115 and 9.0.0 before 9.10.7-alpha.1 validates user email address format with a regular expression whose run time grows quadratically with input length and that is applied without a length limit. An unauthenticated attacker who knows the application ID can send a sign-up request, or a logged-in user can update their own email, with a long crafted email address to block the Node.js event loop and deny service to all clients.
