Short explanation
RESTEasy returns the exception’s localized message in HTTP 500 responses when an unhandled exception lacks an application mapper. An unauthenticated remote attacker who can trigger such an exception may obtain internal details, resulting in a confidentiality impact (CVSS 5.3). No active exploitation is reported, and patch status is unknown.
Exposed exception messages can reveal internal implementation details useful to attackers.
What should be done?
- Review Red Hat vendor advisory
- Apply patches when released
- Configure a custom exception mapper that hides exception details
- Limit exception information in HTTP 500 responses
- Monitor for suspicious 500 responses
Chain of evidence and sources
Show the technical text from the sources
A flaw was found in RESTEasy's default exception mapper. When an unhandled exception other than a WebApplicationException is not handled by an application exception mapper, RESTEasy returns the exception's localized message in the HTTP 500 response body. A remote unauthenticated attacker who can trigger such an exception may obtain information contained in that message. The behavior was reproduced with RESTEasy 7.0.2.Final.
