Short explanation
HDF5 through 2.2.0 contains a NULL pointer dereference vulnerability in H5HL_unprotect() within src/H5HL.c via corrupted files [S0]. This flaw can cause an assertion failure in debug builds and a crash in release builds [S0]. Users or applications opening a crafted file can experience a denial of service [S0].
This vulnerability allows an attacker to cause a denial of service if a user or application opens and traverses a malicious file [S0]. Active exploitation status remains unconfirmed [S0].
What should be done?
- Monitor vendor advisories and follow the vendor guidance for updates [S0].
- Avoid opening HDF5 files obtained from untrusted sources [S0].
The sources give limited detail on some technical conditions. Review the chain of evidence below before deciding how to act.
Chain of evidence and sources
HDF5 sürümlerinde H5HL_unprotect() fonksiyonunda bozuk dosyalar aracılığıyla NULL pointer dereference zafiyeti bulunmaktadır.
Hazırlanmış bir HDF5 dosyasının açılması, hata ayıklama derlemelerinde assertion hatasına ve yayın derlemelerinde çökmeye neden olur.
Zafiyet HDF5 2.2.0 ve önceki sürümleri etkilemektedir.
Show the technical text from the sources
HDF5 through 2.2.0 contains a NULL pointer dereference vulnerability in H5HL_unprotect() in src/H5HL.c. H5HL_protect() pins a single metadata cache entry for a local heap, either the heap prefix or the separate data block, and H5HL_unprotect() unpins it on the final unprotect. When the metadata cache destroys a corrupted local heap entry, H5HL__prfx_dest() unlinks it from the heap by setting heap->prfx or heap->dblk to NULL. A crafted HDF5 file can therefore reach H5HL_unprotect() with no cached object to unpin, and the function passes the NULL pointer to H5AC_unpin_entry(). This causes an assertion failure in debug builds and a NULL pointer dereference and crash in release builds. An attacker who can get a user or application to open and traverse a malicious file can cause a denial of service.
