Short explanation

Optimole plugin versions up to and including 4.2.18 lack proper sanitization of comment input, resulting in a stored cross‑site scripting (XSS) vulnerability. An unauthenticated attacker can inject malicious script via a comment that, once approved, executes on pages containing an iframe or video element.

Why does it matter?

The flaw enables attackers to run arbitrary code in visitors’ browsers and potentially steal sessions or credentials.

What should be done?

  • Upgrade to a version newer than 4.2.18 if the vendor provides one.
  • If no fixed version exists, restrict comment posting or enforce strict moderation.
  • Apply proper input sanitization and output escaping for comment fields.
  • Disable lazy‑load of video/iframe content until a fix is available.
Note on uncertainty

The sources give limited detail on some technical conditions. Review the chain of evidence below before deciding how to act.

The Optimole – Optimize Images | Convert WebP & AVIF | CDN & Lazy Load | Image Optimization plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to Stored Cross-Site Scripting via the 'comment' parameter in all versions up to, and including, 4.2.18 due to insufficient input sanitization and output escaping. This makes it possible for unauthenticated attackers to inject arbitrary web scripts in pages that will execute whenever a user accesses an injected page. Exploitation requires the comment to be approved by an administrator and for the affected post to contain at least one iframe or video element (e.g., a core Video block), which is sufficient under default plugin settings where video lazy loading is enabled.
