Short explanation

Axel Download Accelerator contains a path traversal vulnerability due to performing URL percent-decoding on the output filename after the URL has been parsed and the filename component is extracted.

Why does it matter?

This vulnerability allows a crafted URL to cause the application to write downloaded content to arbitrary filesystem paths relative to the current working directory, presenting high risks to integrity and availability.

What should be done?

  • Follow vendor advisories by reviewing provided patch references
  • Update the affected Axel software
Chain of evidence and sources2 verified claims

Axel Download Accelerator 2.17.14 ve önceki sürümleri, çıkış dosya adında http_decode() fonksiyonunu çalıştırarak yol geçişi zafiyetine sebebiyet verir.

Hazırlanan bir URL, indirilen içeriğin mevcut çalışma dizinine göre rastgele dosya sistemi yollarına yazılmasına yol açabilir.

Show the technical text from the sources

Axel Download Accelerator 2.17.14 and earlier performs URL percent-decoding (http_decode()) on the output filename after the URL has been parsed and the filename component extracted. This allows an attacker to embed %2e%2e%2f (URL-encoded ../) sequences in the URL path. These sequences survive the URL parser intact (they contain no literal / characters) but are decoded into directory traversal sequences before the output file is opened for writing. As a result, a crafted URL can cause axel to write downloaded content to arbitrary filesystem paths relative to the current working directory.
