Echo X-Real-IP Extractor Vulnerability

Short explanation

In the Echo Go web framework, the ExtractIPFromRealIPHeader function validates whether the client-supplied X-Real-IP value belongs to a trusted range instead of validating the direct network peer, allowing attackers to spoof client identities.

Why does it matter?

Applications using this extractor for IP allowlists, rate limiting, audit logs, or forwarding headers can trust attacker-controlled addresses, undermining core security controls.

What should be done?

  • Upgrade to version 5.4.1 or follow the vendor advisory
  • Use ExtractIPDirect until upgrading
  • Ensure that only trusted proxies can reach Echo and replace client-supplied headers
Chain of evidence and sources2 verified claims

Show the technical text from the sources

Echo is a Go web framework. From 5.0.0 until 5.4.1, Echo v5's ExtractIPFromRealIPHeader validates whether the client-supplied X-Real-IP value belongs to a trusted range instead of validating the direct network peer. A client reaching Echo directly, or through a proxy that preserves the header, can supply a loopback or private address and have Context.RealIP return that spoofed identity. Applications using the extractor for IP allowlists, rate limiting, audit logs, or forwarding headers can consequently trust an attacker-controlled address; the default direct extractor and Echo v4 are unaffected. This issue is fixed in 5.4.1.

Patch and Remediation Guide

Solution & Remediation Advisory

Patch status unknown

İncelenen resmî kaynaklarda yama durumu doğrulanamadı. Bu sonuç “yama yok” anlamına gelmez.

Confirm the affected product and version against the source evidence above.
Restrict access to internet-facing services and apply network segmentation.
Until a patch is confirmed, follow the vendor advisory; do not read an unknown status as “no patch”.
Monitor server logs and network endpoints for signs of anomalous execution.
