Short explanation

A vulnerability in opentelemetry-java causes excessive CPU consumption during the parsing of W3C tracestate headers. An unauthenticated attacker can block request or event-loop threads.

Why does it matter?

This security flaw can be exploited over the network without authentication to trigger excessive resource consumption, potentially leading to denial of service conditions.

What should be done?

  • Update to version 1.67.0 or later
  • Follow vendor security advisories
Chain of evidence and sources2 verified claims

opentelemetry-java, 1.67.0 öncesi sürümlerde W3C tracestate başlıklarını ayrıştırırken kuadratik CPU tüketimine tabidir.

Show the technical text from the sources

opentelemetry-java is the Java implementation of the OpenTelemetry API for recording telemetry, and SDK for managing telemetry recorded by the API. Prior to 1.67.0, W3CTraceContextPropagator.extract() uses regex delimiter processing that can exhibit quadratic backtracking while parsing tracestate headers containing long runs of spaces or tabs without a following comma. An unauthenticated attacker whose headers reach extraction can repeatedly block request or event-loop threads and cause excessive CPU consumption, with practical impact bounded by ingress header-size limits, proxy configuration, and threading. This issue is fixed in version 1.67.0.

Patch and Remediation Guide

Solution & Remediation Advisory

Patch status unknown

İncelenen resmî kaynaklarda yama durumu doğrulanamadı. Bu sonuç “yama yok” anlamına gelmez.

Confirm the affected product and version against the source evidence above.
Restrict access to internet-facing services and apply network segmentation.
Until a patch is confirmed, follow the vendor advisory; do not read an unknown status as “no patch”.
Monitor server logs and network endpoints for signs of anomalous execution.
