Short explanation
The conch Telnet transport in Twisted can suffer from remote memory exhaustion and denial of service due to an unbounded subnegotiation buffer.
It allows an unauthenticated remote peer to omit the terminator and continuously grow the buffer, terminating the process and hosted services.
What should be done?
- Follow the vendor advisory
- Update affected versions
- Implement network-level access controls
The sources give limited detail on some technical conditions. Review the chain of evidence below before deciding how to act.
Chain of evidence and sources
Twisted çerçevesindeki conch Telnet aktarımı, alt pazarlık arabelleğinde azami uzunluk sınırı uygulamaz.
Telnet seçenek müzakeresi kimlik doğrulamasından önce gerçekleştiği için kimlik doğrulamayan bir eş arabelleği büyütebilir.
Show the technical text from the sources
Twisted is an event-based framework for internet applications, supporting Python 3.6+. Prior to 26.10.0rc1, twisted.conch.telnet.Telnet.dataReceived appends every byte received after IAC SB to a persistent subnegotiation buffer until IAC SE is received, without applying a maximum length. Telnet option negotiation occurs before authentication, so an unauthenticated peer can omit the terminator and continuously grow the buffer. The resulting memory exhaustion can terminate the process and every service it hosts. This issue is fixed in version 26.10.0rc1.
