Short explanation

WordPress Core ≤ 7.0.2 contains a stored XSS flaw that can be exploited by an authenticated Contributor‑plus user through the Quick Edit feature. Because user display names are not properly escaped, an attacker can inject malicious JavaScript that runs when a higher‑privileged administrator views the affected admin screen. It has a CVSS 4.9 (Medium) score, is not listed in the CISA KEV program, and official sources do not confirm a patch status.

Why does it matter?

The injected script can steal admin sessions or enable privilege escalation, posing a serious risk for WordPress sites with many users.

What should be done?

  • Upgrade to WordPress 7.0.3 or later
  • Follow the WordPress Foundation security advisory
  • Restrict Quick Edit for low‑privilege roles
  • Sanitize user display name inputs on the server side
  • Monitor admin sessions for suspicious script activity
Note on uncertainty

The sources give limited detail on some technical conditions. Review the chain of evidence below before deciding how to act.

Show the technical text from the sources

WordPress Core is vulnerable to Stored Cross-Site Scripting via Quick Edit in all versions up to, and including, 7.0.2 due to insufficient escaping of user display names. This makes it possible for authenticated attackers, with Contributor-level access and above, to inject arbitrary web scripts in pages that will execute whenever a higher privileged user accesses the affected administrative screens. This issue only affects sites with a large number of users.
