Short explanation

A path traversal vulnerability in cell output filenames within Jupyter nbconvert versions 5.4.0 through 7.17.2 allows unauthorized file writing.

Why does it matter?

This vulnerability enables attackers to write malicious output data to locations accessible by the victim, compromising system integrity and confidentiality.

What should be done?

  • Follow vendor advisories.
  • Apply updates where available.
Chain of evidence and sources2 verified claims

nbconvert 5.4.0 ile 7.17.2 arasındaki sürümlerde dizin atlatma yoluyla dosya yazma zafiyeti bulunmaktadır.

Kurban kötü amaçlı bir not defterini belirli dışa aktarıcılarla dönüştürdüğünde zafiyet tetiklenebilir.

Show the technical text from the sources

The nbconvert tool, jupyter nbconvert, converts Jupyter notebooks to various other formats via Jinja templates. From 5.4.0 until 7.17.2, ExtractOutputPreprocessor in nbconvert/preprocessors/extractoutput.py joins the attacker-controlled cell output metadata filename to output_files_dir without limiting the result to the intended directory. When a victim converts a malicious notebook with the markdown, LaTeX, reStructuredText, or AsciiDoc exporter, path traversal in the output filename can write attacker-controlled output data to arbitrary locations accessible to the victim. Running the notebook cell again replaces the malicious output metadata, but merely converting the supplied notebook does not. This issue is fixed in version 7.17.2.

Confirm the affected product and version against the source evidence above.
Restrict access to internet-facing services and apply network segmentation.
Until a patch is confirmed, follow the vendor advisory; do not read an unknown status as “no patch”.
Monitor server logs and network endpoints for signs of anomalous execution.
