Short explanation

A use-after-free vulnerability occurs during S/MIME message decryption in Thunderbird while prompting for a security device password. This flaw can lead to a potentially exploitable crash.

Why does it matter?

Finishing or cancelling a message load while a security device password prompt is open frees the message decoder while it is still in use, potentially enabling an attacker to trigger an exploitable application crash.

What should be done?

  • Follow the vendor advisory
  • Apply the provided updates
Chain of evidence and sources2 verified claims

Thunderbird, S/MIME mesaj şifre çözme sırasında güvenlik aygıtı parolası istediğinde use-after-free açığı ortaya çıkmaktadır.

Mesaj yüklemesi istem açıkken tamamlandığında veya iptal edildiğinde mesaj kod çözücüsü kullanımdayken serbest bırakılır.

Show the technical text from the sources

When Thunderbird asked for a security device password (for example a smartcard PIN or the Primary Password) while decrypting an S/MIME message, the message load could finish or be cancelled while the prompt was open. This freed the message decoder while it was still in use, causing a use-after-free and a potentially exploitable crash. This vulnerability was fixed in Thunderbird 158.0.1.

Solution & Remediation Advisory

Patch status unknown

İncelenen resmî kaynaklarda yama durumu doğrulanamadı. Bu sonuç “yama yok” anlamına gelmez.

Confirm the affected product and version against the source evidence above.
Restrict access to internet-facing services and apply network segmentation.
Until a patch is confirmed, follow the vendor advisory; do not read an unknown status as “no patch”.
Monitor server logs and network endpoints for signs of anomalous execution.
