Short explanation

pypdf contains a vulnerability where specially crafted PDF files processed in environments with the Pillow dependency can cause unintended image parsers to be invoked.

Why does it matter?

This vulnerability may lead to low-level availability impacts for applications using pypdf with the Pillow dependency.

What should be done?

  • Follow the vendor advisory
  • Update to version 6.21.1 or later
Chain of evidence and sources2 verified claims

pypdf kütüphanesi 6.21.1 sürümünden önce doğrulanmamış JPEG görüntü verisi yükleme zafiyeti içermektedir.

Opsiyonel Pillow bağımlılığı barındırmayan ortamlar bu zafiyetten etkilenmemektedir.

Show the technical text from the sources

pypdf is a free and open-source pure-python PDF library. Prior to 6.21.1, an attacker can craft a PDF containing image data labeled with the /DCTDecode filter that causes Pillow to select and invoke an unintended image parser when the image is loaded. Environments without the optional Pillow dependency are not affected. This issue is fixed in version 6.21.1.

Confirm the affected product and version against the source evidence above.
Restrict access to internet-facing services and apply network segmentation.
Until a patch is confirmed, follow the vendor advisory; do not read an unknown status as “no patch”.
Monitor server logs and network endpoints for signs of anomalous execution.
