virtualenv Permission Manipulation Vulnerability

Short explanation

In virtualenv versions prior to 21.14.9, the app-data copy seeder retains older permissions when copying cached package files, overriding the current run umask [S0]. This creates a security flaw allowing another local account to modify files [S0].

Why does it matter?

A local attacker can modify package code when cache permissions are permissive, allowing execution by the environment owner [S0].

What should be done?

  • Update to version 21.14.9 or later [S0].
Chain of evidence and sources2 verified claims

virtualenv 21.14.9 öncesi sürümler, önbelleğe alınmış dosya izinlerini koruyarak mevcut umask değerini geçersiz kılar [S0].

Gevşek bir umask ile doldurulan önbellek, diğer yerel hesapların paket kodunu değiştirmesine izin verebilir [S0].

Show the technical text from the sources

virtualenv is a tool for creating isolated virtual python environments. Prior to 21.14.9, the app-data copy seeder uses shutil.copy() to copy cached package files into later environments, causing cached source modes to override the current run's umask. A cache populated under a permissive umask can therefore produce files writable by another local account in a later traversable environment, allowing package code such as pip/__init__.py to be modified and executed by the environment owner. The attacker cannot force the earlier umask, and a private destination parent prevents access. This issue is fixed in version 21.14.9.

Patch and Remediation Guide

Solution & Remediation Advisory

Patch status unknown

İncelenen resmî kaynaklarda yama durumu doğrulanamadı. Bu sonuç “yama yok” anlamına gelmez.

Confirm the affected product and version against the source evidence above.
Restrict access to internet-facing services and apply network segmentation.
Until a patch is confirmed, follow the vendor advisory; do not read an unknown status as “no patch”.
Monitor server logs and network endpoints for signs of anomalous execution.
