Short explanation
libtins through version 4.6 contains an out-of-bounds read vulnerability in DNS::soa_record::init. Remote attackers can supply DNS SOA data lacking NUL terminators, causing heap buffer overruns and potential application crashes.
This vulnerability allows attackers to read past buffer boundaries and potentially trigger a denial of service in target applications. Conflicting severity metrics and CVSS base scores are reported across different security sources.
What should be done?
- Follow official vendor advisories.
- Review input validation mechanisms handling DNS data.
- Monitor vendor updates as patch status is currently UNKNOWN across sources.

Chain of evidence and sources
Show the technical text from the sources
libtins through 4.6 contains an out-of-bounds read vulnerability in DNS::soa_record::init that allows remote attackers to read past buffer bounds by supplying SOA data lacking NUL terminators. Attackers can feed raw SOA RDATA without a zero byte to applications using the buffer constructor, causing strlen to overrun the heap buffer and possibly crash.
