Short explanation

smpeg through version 2.0.0 contains an integer underflow vulnerability in the stream_header function within MPEGsystem.cpp, which can lead to application crashes when processing a crafted MPEG file.

Why does it matter?

This vulnerability allows attackers to cause a denial of service in target applications by supplying a specially crafted MPEG file.

What should be done?

  • Follow the vendor advisory.
  • Check for updates.

Chain of evidence and sources2 verified claims

Show the technical text from the sources

smpeg through 2.0.0 contains an integer underflow vulnerability in stream_header() in MPEGsystem.cpp that allows attackers to wrap packet_size by declaring an undersized packet length. Attackers can supply a crafted MPEG file opened via SMPEG_new, SMPEG_new_rwops or SMPEG_new_data to trigger a reachable assertion or out-of-bounds copy, crashing the application.
