Short explanation
Wheels versions 4.0.0 through 4.1.2 use case‑insensitive comparisons, allowing access outside the application root via symlinks. This leads to limited file disclosure and the ability for the CLI database‑dump command to write outside the root. The issue is fixed in 4.2.0; patch status could not be verified in official sources.
An attacker can read limited files or, under certain conditions, write files outside the application root, causing data leakage and potential service disruption.
What should be done?
- Upgrade to version 4.2.0
- Monitor vendor advisory as patch status is unknown
- Restrict use of symlinks
- Enforce case‑sensitive path checks
- Disable unnecessary CLI database‑dump functionality
The sources give limited detail on some technical conditions. Review the chain of evidence below before deciding how to act.
Chain of evidence and sources

Wheels 4.0.0 through 4.1.2 uses case-insensitive comparisons in path-containment checks on case-sensitive filesystems. Canonical-path checks for zip entries, package mappings, development assets/docs, guide images and image tags can accept paths through an existing symlink to a case-distinct sibling directory, allowing access outside the intended root, including limited file disclosure. Separately, the CLI database-dump output check can write outside the application root to an existing writable case-distinct sibling directory; that action requires the CLI POST, loopback and password gate. This is fixed in 4.2.0.
