Short explanation

ytnef through versions 2.1.2 contains a heap out-of-bounds read vulnerability in the MAPIPrint function due to processed compressed RTF properties. This issue can lead to the leakage of adjacent heap bytes and crash ytnefprint via a crafted winmail.dat file.

Why does it matter?

This vulnerability matters because processing a specially crafted winmail.dat file with user interaction can cause information disclosure and application crashes.

What should be done?

  • Follow official vendor advisories and updates
  • Avoid processing untrusted winmail.dat files

Show the technical text from the sources

ytnef through 2.1.2 contains a heap out-of-bounds read vulnerability in MAPIPrint() that allows attackers to read past heap allocations by supplying compressed RTF properties. Attackers can deliver a crafted winmail.dat whose decompressed RTF lacks a NUL terminator, causing printf to over-read, crashing ytnefprint and leaking adjacent heap bytes.

Confirm the affected product and version against the source evidence above.
Restrict access to internet-facing services and apply network segmentation.
Until a patch is confirmed, follow the vendor advisory; do not read an unknown status as “no patch”.
Monitor server logs and network endpoints for signs of anomalous execution.
