Short explanation
CVE‑2026‑111129 affects assimp versions 0‑6.0.5 where OgreBinarySerializer::ReadAnimationKeyFrames dereferences a NULL pointer when handling unvalidated animation track targets. An attacker can supply a crafted .mesh file referencing a missing sub‑mesh or shared geometry to crash the host process. No active exploitation is recorded (not in CISA KEV) and patch status is unknown in official sources.
Assimp is widely used for 3D model import; this flaw can cause application crashes and service disruption when triggered.
What should be done?
- Monitor the vendor advisory and apply updates when released
- If no patch exists, validate the provenance of .mesh files
- Process input files within a sandbox
- Add explicit validation of animation track targets in code
- Consider alternative 3D import libraries if risk remains

Chain of evidence and sources
Show the technical text from the sources
Open Asset Import Library (assimp) through 6.0.5 contains a NULL pointer dereference vulnerability in the Ogre3D binary mesh importer's OgreBinarySerializer::ReadAnimationKeyFrames() handling of unvalidated animation track targets. Attackers can supply a crafted .mesh file with a morph animation track targeting a missing submesh or absent shared geometry to crash the host process.
