Short explanation

CFITSIO versions up to 4.7.0 contain a heap‑based out-of-bounds read in the HCOMPRESS tile decoder via the input_nnybble function in fits_hdecompress.c. An attacker can supply a crafted FITS file with an oversized tile geometry to crash applications or disclose limited heap memory. (S0)

Why does it matter?

Limited memory disclosure and possible denial‑of‑service threaten the reliability of astronomy data processing tools. (S0)

What should be done?

  • Monitor HEASARC advisories and security bulletins (S0).
  • If no patch exists, upgrade to a version newer than 4.7.0 when released.
  • Add validation for FITS HCOMPRESS tile definitions before processing.
  • Enable memory hardening features such as ASLR and stack canaries.
  • Analyze suspicious FITS files in an isolated environment.

Show the technical text from the sources

CFITSIO through 4.7.0 contains a heap-based out-of-bounds read vulnerability in the HCOMPRESS tile decoder that allows attackers to read past the compressed tile buffer via input_nnybble in fits_hdecompress.c. Attackers can supply a crafted FITS file with ZCMPTYPE HCOMPRESS_1 declaring oversized tile geometry to crash applications calling fits_read_pix or disclose limited heap memory.
