Short explanation

Nodemailer versions 3.0.0 through 10.0.13 are affected by a regular expression denial of service vulnerability within SMTPConnection._actionEHLO.

Why does it matter?

This vulnerability allows malicious or man-in-the-middle SMTP servers to block the Node.js event loop for hours, resulting in denial of service conditions.

What should be done?

  • Monitor vendor advisories and official resources
  • Review updates for unaffected versions
  • Follow developer recommendations regarding patch status

Chain of evidence and sources2 verified claims

Show the technical text from the sources

Nodemailer 3.0.0 before 10.0.13 has a regular expression denial of service in SMTPConnection._actionEHLO, whose four AUTH mechanism detection regexes contain overlapping whitespace sub-patterns that backtrack quadratically. A malicious or man-in-the-middle SMTP server can reply to EHLO with 250-AUTH, a long whitespace run and a non-matching token, blocking the Node.js event loop for tens of seconds to hours before authentication.

Patch status unknown

İncelenen resmî kaynaklarda yama durumu doğrulanamadı. Bu sonuç “yama yok” anlamına gelmez.

Confirm the affected product and version against the source evidence above.
Restrict access to internet-facing services and apply network segmentation.
Until a patch is confirmed, follow the vendor advisory; do not read an unknown status as “no patch”.
Monitor server logs and network endpoints for signs of anomalous execution.
