Short explanation
The Dynamic Client Registration (DCR) endpoint in Keycloak fails to validate authorization for the deprecated defaultRoles field, allowing an authenticated attacker with client‑creation privileges or a valid Initial Access Token (IAT) to inject excessive roles into the realm's default‑roles configuration. This inflates access tokens, increases memory and CPU usage, and can lead to denial‑of‑service. CVSS 6.8 (Medium), no active exploitation recorded, patch status unknown.
An authenticated attacker can bloat tokens, degrading Keycloak performance and creating a denial‑of‑service risk.
What should be done?
- Restrict client‑creation privileges
- Revoke unused IATs
- Monitor token sizes
- Follow Red Hat security advisory
- Upgrade when a fixed version is released
- Add custom validation for defaultRoles
Chain of evidence and sources
Show the technical text from the sources
A flaw was found in Keycloak. The Dynamic Client Registration (DCR) endpoint does not properly validate authorization when processing the deprecated defaultRoles field. An authenticated attacker with client creation privileges or an Initial Access Token (IAT) can inject excessive roles into the realm's default roles configuration. This causes clients across the realm to generate bloated access tokens, resulting in performance and memory degradation that can lead to a Denial of Service (DoS).
