Short explanation

An authenticated OS command injection vulnerability exists in ZoneMinder due to unsanitized monitor names in download_functions.php. Affecting versions prior to 1.38.3, this flaw enables the execution of arbitrary commands as the web server user.

Why does it matter?

It matters because an authenticated attacker can abuse the event export feature to execute arbitrary commands on the target system with the privileges of the web server user.

What should be done?

  • Upgrading ZoneMinder to version 1.38.3 or later
  • Following vendor advisories and security updates
Chain of evidence and sources2 verified claims

ZoneMinder sürümleri 1.38.3 öncesinde downloadEvents() fonksiyonu monitor adı değerini escapeshellarg yerine manuel olarak tek tırnak içine alır.

Açık, web sunucusu kullanıcısı yetkileriyle rastgele komutların çalıştırılmasına izin verir.

Show the technical text from the sources

ZoneMinder is a free, open source closed-circuit television software application. Prior to 1.38.3, downloadEvents() manually wraps a monitor Name value in single quotes instead of using escapeshellarg() before placing it in shell commands when a user with monitor-create or monitor-edit permission stores a monitor Name containing shell metacharacters and a user with Events View permission exports that monitor's events. In this attack mechanism, the stored monitor Name reaches both the ffmpeg concatenation command and the tar or zip archive command and breaks out of manual quoting. Arbitrary commands execute as the web server user. This issue is fixed in version 1.38.3.

Patch and Remediation Guide

Solution & Remediation Advisory

Patch status unknown

İncelenen resmî kaynaklarda yama durumu doğrulanamadı. Bu sonuç “yama yok” anlamına gelmez.

Confirm the affected product and version against the source evidence above.
Restrict access to internet-facing services and apply network segmentation.
Until a patch is confirmed, follow the vendor advisory; do not read an unknown status as “no patch”.
Monitor server logs and network endpoints for signs of anomalous execution.
