CVE-2026-102359: Kroki TikZ Secure Mode Local File Read Vulnerability

Short explanation

The TikZ backend in Kroki prior to 0.31.2 only blocks \verbatiminput when KROKI_SAFE_MODE is enabled, allowing unauthenticated actors to read sensitive files via native TeX file-read primitives.

Why does it matter?

Unauthenticated attackers can retrieve contents of sensitive files such as private keys, credentials, or configuration data through rendered SVG outputs.

What should be done?

  • Follow the vendor advisory
  • Review update guidance
  • Check affected software versions
Chain of evidence and sources2 verified claims

Kroki 0.31.2 öncesi sürümlerde TikZ güvenli mod yalnızca \verbatiminput komutunu engellemektedir.

Kimliği doğrulanmamış bir aktör hazırlanmış LaTeX verilerini göndererek hassas dosyaları okuyabilir.

Show the technical text from the sources

Kroki creates diagrams from textual descriptions. Prior to 0.31.2, the TikZ backend's tikz/tikz2svg guard used when KROKI_SAFE_MODE is enabled blocks only \verbatiminput while allowing native TeX file-read primitives including \openin, \read, \input, and \include. TeX Live's permissive openin_any setting remains active, so an unauthenticated actor can submit crafted LaTeX to POST /tikz/svg or the generic diagram API and cause the renderer to read any file accessible to the Kroki container user. The file contents are rendered into the returned SVG, which may disclose mounted secrets, configuration data, credentials, private keys, or process environment data. The -no-shell-escape option prevents shell execution but does not restrict these native file operations. This issue is fixed in version 0.31.2.

Patch and Remediation Guide

Solution & Remediation Advisory

Patch status unknown

İncelenen resmî kaynaklarda yama durumu doğrulanamadı. Bu sonuç “yama yok” anlamına gelmez.

Confirm the affected product and version against the source evidence above.
Restrict access to internet-facing services and apply network segmentation.
Until a patch is confirmed, follow the vendor advisory; do not read an unknown status as “no patch”.
Monitor server logs and network endpoints for signs of anomalous execution.
