It occupies the former Ministry of Commerce building (1921–1922) and opened as a museum on 2 April 2008. The core exhibit Decoding Thainess (14 rooms on how Thai identity was formed) has run since 2017; there's also a free Underground Museum at MRT Sanam Chai (2020).
